In October 2008, a letter to the editor was published in the Hants Journal about a tree that was going to have to be cut down to make way for the twinning of Highway 101.
Ardoise resident Andrew Harvie read the letter and went to the tree (it was
felled the day the letter appeared in the Hants Journal), and gathered some of the best pieces of wood.
The tree was very old. You could imagine it standing there and growing during the building of the local dykes by the Acadians, and a battle that took place on the hill that the tree stood, which gave the hill it’s name: Battle Hill.
From there Harvie talked several local wood carvers into making something out of this wood.
An auction was held over the summer with the intent that the proceeds go to the Hants Community Hospital.
The Rotary Club of Windsor purchased the remaining carving and donated it to the hospital auxiliary to be sold as part of the live auction during their gala on Oct. 1.
The carving was purchased by Mary Akin and her daughter Barbara Redden for $490.
