Windsor’s town councillors split on a protection from secondhand smoke bylaw November 24. Deputy mayor Laurie Murley and councillor Liz Galbraith voting against the new bylaw; councillors Dave Seeley and John Bregante supported second reading.
Mayor Paul Beazley’s vote carried the motion and now no smoking is allowed on any property owned or leased by the Town, including all town recreational facilities, parks playgrounds, trails and building lands.
A progressive leadership role, in these types of issues is needed, Beazley says.” I do recognize there will be citizens who don’t agree (with the bylaw) but I expect a vast majority feel it is the right thing to do.”
The bylaw is quite ordinary in this day and age, Beazley notes. “We are not alone in the initiative. (Other councils) recognize the health issues in second hand smoke.”
Those caught in violation of the Protection from Secondhand Smoke Bylaw could be subject to a fine of up to $200.
