Windsor Forks’ is seeing 2010 in with a new connection to Upper Falmouth. After $1,072,585 replacement project, Sangster’s Bridge reopened just before New Year’s.
Department of Transportation spokesperson Steve Smith, says the project took a little longer than hoped, “but we’re glad it’s up and running now.”
There was discussion, often heated, about expanding Sangster’s Bridge to a two-lanes span, but traffic volume in the area did not justify the cost, Smith says. “It was getting near the end of its useful life so it was replaced ... with a one lane bridge, as it was before.”
Hants West MLA Chuck Porter says it would have been wonderful to have two lanes, but the new bridge is far better than the old bridge and much safer. “That was the main concern,” he says. “It’s certainly nice to have this bridge reopened.”
There was a point when reconstruction was stressful for people, but most seem content the bridge project is finally done, he adds. “It’ll cut down rerouting through Windsor. This easy access to Martock is helpful as well.”
Thanks to a new, sturdier structure, trucks can once again cross the bridge, Porter says. “I was out (on a Saturday) and I drove across it … it’s great to finally have it opened.”
Windsor Forks Elementary, located close to Sangster’s Bridge, experienced some difficulties, principal Shelley King says. “
Some busses were rerouted through Windsor and it meant some changes for families on the Falmouth side of the bridge, King says. “We rely on our roadways being opened to us. Yet, for a safe bridge it was worth the inconvenience.
“Still, we’re happy to see it opened and that (Upper Falmouth) families have a quick connection to their school once again.”
