For the first time in more than 20 years, there will be a race for mayor in Hantsport.

Coun. Robbie Zwicker and Hantsport’s Volunteer of the Year for 2012, Lorraine McQueen, have both declared their intent to run for the position Mayor Wayne Folker has held for the last 21 years.

By the nomination deadline, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m., it appeared citizens might only be called upon to select a new mayor this time around.

Nominations closed with councillors Harold Bulger, Shannon Cunningham and Faye Hill re-offering, along with citizen candidates Margot Bureaux, Paul Morton and Rob Frederick. Council operates with six councillors and one mayor.

The candidates eyeing seats at Hantsport’s council table will be elected by acclamation if none of the application packages are withdrawn by Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.

If a mayoral candidate withdraws, the other contender will be acclaimed. If both names stand, citizens will go to the polls on Oct. 20.

Long-time council members Coun. Peter Murray and Deputy Mayor Don Rockwell did not re-offer.
