Canada Day in Hantsport is more than a statutory holiday – it’s a reason to celebrate.
Hundreds of spectators woke in time to catch a glimpse of familiar fairy tale and fable characters marching down School Street in the children’s parade at 10 a.m.
Mayor Wayne Folker commended all participants for their well-crafted costumes and presented several awards to some truly unique characters.
Princess Pumpkin Regatta, also known as Nevaeh Morton, may still be in diapers, but her royal attire earned her best costume. Most original entry went to Acadian fur trappers Mollie and Anna Syme and their father earned honourable mentions from the crowd while hauling their canoe to the parade’s final destination.
Town crier Llyod Smith’s strong vocals, coupled two blasts of a fire engine’s horn, kicked off the Grand Street Parade at 1:30 p.m. The sidewalks filled with people of all ages standing shoulder-to-shoulder, smiling.
Following the parade, several spectators gathered at the HMCC grounds to enjoy an exhibition-style fairground, show n’ shine car exhibit, slip n’ slide, bounce kingdoms and live music.
