A lone female passenger travelling eastbound on Highway 101 had a close call between exits 6 and 7 on Thursday, Aug. 19, after hitting the right shoulder of the road in a 2008 Nissan Sentra and veering across the center line into oncoming traffic.
“She swung her car back on the road, but lost control. It would’ve almost been a head-on but she jerked the steering column back to turn to the right and her car went sideways,” said Constable Andy Harris of the Windsor District RCMP.
“The rear end of her car went into the guard rail,” Harris continued.
A passerby in the opposite lane called 911 at 9:09 a.m. Harris says the driver was “shaken up” but uninjured. Road conditions were clear and the woman was travelling the speed limit. The rear end of the car received extensive damage and had to be towed. Traffic was held up, with only one clear lane, until 9:40 a.m.
“It’s been a busy summer on that 101 Highway,” Harris commented. “We’ve had two fatalities in that area since May.”
He urges drivers to approach the two-laned section of freeway between Windsor and Falmouth, known to locals as the causeway, with caution.
“We had a bad accident in that exact location three weeks ago where a male was driving a little Toyota, he lost control (and) went almost head on into a five-ton truck.”
The middle-aged male was airlifted to Halifax. He is now home recovering from his injuries.
