A Mosherville man has been charged with impaired driving causing death, and one woman is dead, after the SUV he was driving left the road Jan. 26 and ended up in a pond in Mosherville, Hants County.

Members of the RCMP’s Windsor Rural Detachment arrived on scene shortly after a 911 call was made at 9 p.m. Mechelle Duncan was still inside the submerged vehicle.

With the assistance from three fire departments — Brooklyn, Windsor and Summerville, as well as Emergency Health Services, Duncan was removed from the vehicle and transported to the Hants Community Hospital. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver, 36-year-old Steve Douglas Saunders, has been charged with impaired driving causing death and refusing to provide a breath sample in relation to the crash.

Cst. George Cameron, of the RCMP Windsor Rural Detachment, said the road conditions were “dry and normal for this time of year.” He believes the two occupants of the vehicle were in a relationship, but he was unable to confirm this fact as of press time.

The investigation is ongoing to determine how the vehicle ended up in the pond.

Cameron noted that it is possible more charges will be issued when the investigation concludes.

Cameron said Saunders managed to escape the vehicle without sustaining major physical injuries.

Saunders is due in Windsor provincial court Feb. 28 at 10 a.m.
