The Long Pond Heritage Classic Committee has opted to cancel this year’s Long Pond Heritage Classic due to a forecasted snowstorm.

“The safety of our players, celebrities, vendors, volunteers and spectators is our top priority,” said Rob Frost, the event chair, in a press release.

Former NHL celebrities such as Terry O’Reilly, Rick Middleton and Brian Propp faced potential flight cancellations or delays, while other Long Pond Heritage Classic players were set to travel from various communities across Nova Scotia.

“We want to ensure people are off the roads when the storm hits,” said Frost.

Players will receive a complete refund on their tickets.

Event organizers are currently discussing whether it is feasible to reschedule the Saturday, Feb. 9 fundraiser, or begin planning for next year.

The hockey events scheduled for Feb. 8, however, are still taking place.

The Friday night doubleheader charity hockey game will be held at the Hants Exhibition Arena in Windsor. The Windsor RCMP will face–off against Windsor and Hantsport firefighters at 6 p.m. The Long Pond Classic All-Star game will start at 7:30 p.m.

Most of the events scheduled for Windsor’s winter carnival are still taking place.

On Friday, all of the senior citizen activities at the Hants County War Memorial Community Centre are on. These include a 2 p.m. senior cribbage tournament, a 4:30 p.m. senior luncheon and a 7 p.m. 45s card tournament.

There will be a pre-teen dance at the Hants County War Memorial Community Centre from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This dance is intended for children age seven to 12. The cost is $5.

Fireworks will follow at 8:45 p.m. at Elmcroft Park.

All Saturday winter carnival events have been cancelled.

The Sunday, Feb. 10 Family Fun Day from 1-4 p.m. at the Hants County War Memorial Community Centre is still set to run as planned. The cost of $3 includes one bounce castle entry, a hot dog and a drink, a prize at the fish pond or hockey shoot, plus other games and activities. Additional tickets cost $1 each.

The 2 p.m. family skating at Long Pond on Sunday has been cancelled.
