A life sentence has been handed out to one of two brothers charged with first-degree murder in connection with an East Uniacke homicide.
Kyle Brian Gowen, 23, of Eastern Passage pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Dillion Blair Jewett, Dartmouth, in Nova Scotia Supreme Court June 7.
At the Kentville Justice Centre, Justice Suzanne Hood sentenced Gowen to life in prison with no eligibility of parole for 15 years. In addition, she imposed a lifetime firearm prohibition and ordered Gowen to provide a DNA sample.
An agreed statement of facts confirmed Jewett had previously dated 19-year-old Amanda Allison Greene, the woman Gowen was dating Oct. 2, the night of Jewett’s murder. Greene, a resident of Cow Bay, is also facing first-degree murder charges in relation to Jewett’s death.
Jewett’s body was discovered by people riding all-terrain vehicles near the East Uniacke quarry, Oct. 3.
Gowen’s younger brother, Steven Shaun Gowen, 21, is in custody facing first-degree murder and accessory after the fact charges in Jewett’s death. He is due in Kentville court Thursday.
Another Eastern Passage man, 21-year-old James William Gale Patterson, has been charged with being an accessory to Jewett’s murder after the fact. He is out on bail, but expected to enter a plea in Dartmouth provincial court, July 4.
Greene’s preliminary inquiry is scheduled for Friday in Shubenacadie provincial court.
