Construction of the Wentworth Roundabout nearly put an end to Vaughan’s Convenience stores but Steven Vaughan, part owner of the family concern, says business is booming again now that the roadway is open.
“We’re on par with last December,” he said in an interview on Jan. 4, but business had been struggling along at 50 to 60 per cent of its normal level only a few weeks earlier. Mr. Vaughan said his business lost between $1 and $1.1 million in gross sales from mid September, when construction began, to early December, when it finished.
Though he kept his staff on throughout the construction period, some of his tenants, which include an A&W restaurant and a Capt. Sub franchise, had to lay off workers or reduce their hours.
He says it it was only the good general health of his convenience store that kept it open. Had the construction happened earlier, his business might have gone under.
Even now, he’s not sure his business has fully recovered as it was showing a 15 per cent increase over the previous year’s level until construction began. It’s not back at that level yet.
He says he plans to seek compensation through a provincial government claim process.
Business is booming at Vaughan’s Convenience.
