Gypsum
The approval of the extension to Canadian Gypsum’s Miller’s Creek quarry, however limited, is disappointing.
In an era when sustainable development is the watchword, we are allowing a mining company to operate in the headwaters of three rivers. There is little doubt that even the most carefully managed mining techiques cannot help but have a damaging effect on wildlife— some of it already endangered— in that area.
The new Community Liaison Committee which will monitor the expansion will have its work cut out for it. But in its favor is the slow recovery of the U.S. housing market. Canadian Gypsum is employing only half the staff it had at peak strength two years ago and is unlikely to proceed with development in a hurry.
Over the next two years the political climate may change just enough to discourage the company from proceeding with the project at all.
The battle isn’t over yet.
