The Windsor Hants County Rugby Machine men’s team is close to securing a spot in the playoffs.

With only four regular season games to go, as of Aug. 3, the Machine men were third in the standings in Rugby Nova Scotia’s Division II League, with a record of four wins, one loss and one tie.

James Hardy, president of the Windsor Hants County Rugby Football Club, says the Machine have a good chance of maintaining at least a Top 6 position in the next couple of weeks and, in doing so, advancing to the league championships later this month.

“It looks like we’ll be in the playoffs and, hopefully, we’ll bring home the final cup,” Hardy said.

“We haven’t made it to playoffs in two years.”

The Machine brought the Hants County Cup back to West Hants in June, after beating Enfield 60-45.

Unlike their male counterparts, the women’s Machine team, formed in 2010, had yet to add a win to their five-game season record as of Aug. 3.

But, Hardy says, it has been a solid building year for the team that is still relatively new.

“They’ve been making some good strides forward.”

Both teams have home games against Halifax at the King’s-Edgehill School, on College Road, Aug. 14. The women take to the field at 1 p.m., and the men’s game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Playin’ pretty

Hardy says even people who aren’t particularly interested in the game of rugby may get a kick out of a breast cancer fundraiser some of the Machine men are participating in this fall.

Male teams from all over the province will come together for the Oct. 8 event, hosted by Rugby Nova Scotia, and, essentially, play like girls.

“Come out and watch a game of burly men playing in dresses,” Hardy said.

Hardy says the location of the match has yet to be decided but it will likely take place in the HRM.
