AVHS girls lose to Horton

The week started off well for the Avon View Avalanche Sr. Girls rugby team when they received notice from Middleton Regional High that MRHS would forfeit their Western Regional Playoff game to the Avalanche. That announcement, in turn, put the Avalanche directly into the Western Regional Championship game May 24 at AVHS. The girls went up against the Horton High School Griffins.

Hopes were high that AVHS had built a strong enough team under Head Coach Jim Bryan that a berth in the provincials in Cape Breton the first weekend of June was a realistic opportunity.

Avon View played a competitive game against Horton but the Kings County school grabbed a 10-0 lead at half-time and scored 10 more points in the second half en route to a 20-5 victory.

Allison Sanford, of Avon View, scored their try and only points of the game late in the second half.

The Avalanche had some rookies added to their roster for the 2012 season but they also had an established core of veterans but scoring opportunities did not exist when AVHS needed them the most.

KES advances to provincials

Western Zone Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation Co-ordinator Dale Sanford called the King’s-Edgehill Sr. Boys rugby team "the class of the Valley" as they annihilated AVHS 46-7 to win the Western Zone Regional Championship game and advance to the provincials in Cape Breton next weekend.

Sanford called the win "dominating" and believes KES could enjoy a great weekend in Cape Breton this coming weekend.

As of deadline, the official score card, which would detail who scored, was not available.
