KES ends Digby’s winning streak

Digby’s Lady Mariners lost their last basketball game of the season but hung onto first place in the Valley.

The senior girls lost to second place King’s-Edgehill 72-57 in a physical match that determined final league standing in division three.

The Lady Mariners were undefeated in league games until Tuesday when King’s-Edgehill took revenge for their only loss of the year; 74-56 to Digby at Acadia on Jan. 27.

Had Digby lost by another four points, the Windsor team would have stole first place and had the easier draw this weekend at regionals.

The two teams stayed within two points through the first 18 minutes, when Edgehill’s Michelle Morrison took charge of the game – shutting down the Digby offence and converting two steals in a row with easy lay ups. At the break it was 38-34 for the Windsor private school.

And then all heck broke loose – Edgehill’s Salome Myers and Nina Cox were the beneficiaries of Morrison’s energetic defence as the visiting team pulled ahead – way ahead. It was 51-38 with 13 minutes to go before Digby woke up and put a halt to the Edgehill rampage.

Digby’s Lyndi Daley contributed a sudden six points to help the Mariners regain their balance but the damage was done and Digby was never again within ten.

The game, especially down the stretch was highly physical and Digby’s coach Tyler Colwell was ejected for his second technical after hollering at the referee “What, did you swallow your whistle?”

When assessed the T, he responded with “Thank you. That’s the best call you made all night.”

Digby’s Emily Dugas had 28 points and both Daley and Lynn Wall had 12 for Digby.

Morrison had 18 for King’s-Edgehill, Myers 15 and Denise Roy 14.

Colwell said his team was a little slow after not playing much the last two weeks. And they missed captain Leeaan LeBlanc who was sidelined with a bruised knee, but intends to play on the weekend. “We’ll be ready for the weekend,” said Colwell after the game.

The loss was the end of a 17-game winning streak for the Mariners. Because they finished first in the Valley, Digby plays Bridgewater, the second place team from the South Shore at noon on Saturday in Shelburne. King’s- Edgehill meets Shelburne, the South Shore’s best, at 10 a.m.

The consolation game runs at 3 p.m. and the championship at 5.
