“This is a complete surprise! I am honored.” Declared David Parsons when, on the morning of February 5, 2010, he was presented with a life membership by Royal Canadian Legion, Lucknow Branch No. 109, Hantsport.
The Branch which now consists of a small group of World War two veterans were unanimous in their desire to honor Comrade Parson in this way. Gerald Wilcox, first Vice President of Lucknow placed the life member pin on the proud recipient’s lapel.
Born in Bay Roberts Newfoundland, in 1919, Parsons volunteered in 1940 to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in Canada, England, North Africa, the Atlantic Ocean, France and Germany as a navigator with Coastal Command and Special Services Squadrons. He was discharged with the rank of Flight-Lieutenant and his medals included: Operational Wings, the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, North African Star, France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence of Briton Medal and the War Medal.
After graduating with a mechanical engineering degree he was employed by Fundy Gypsum Company, then the Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company.
After retirement he remained active in the Legion and in the town serving on numerous boards and committees. At the present time he is secretary of Lucknow Branch No. 109 which is part of Zone eight. He is determined to help Lucknow hang on to their Charter so the circle will not be broken.
