Heading into the 2011 Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Federation’s football season, no one really knew what could be expected from the Avon View Avalanche. They went 0-8 last year.

If the Sept. 8 regular season opener’s 9-3 win over the Central Kings Gators at Raymond Field at Acadia University is any indication, then 2011 will certainly be better.

Rookie quarterback Trevor House was razor sharp, completing nine of 12 passes for 150 yards while also kicking a field goal for the Avalanche.

Russ Lavergne caught seven of House's nine completions for 110 yards.

JP Primeau was solid on the ground rushing for a total of 90 yards including a 35-yard touchdown run.

Avon View had an exceptional game on defense as AJ Whitehead and JJ Chambers both had 11 tackles. Brandon Hirschfield finished with eight tackles and an interception while MacKenzie Windsor also had an interception.

Avon View will have a bye this week in the NSSAF Subway Schedule but will be back in action Sept. 23 in Antigonish beginning at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Dr. John Hugh Gillis at St. Francis Xavier football field.

The Avalanche will be looking for a boisterous hometown audience Oct. 2 when they play their first home game of the season against JL Ilsley High School from Halifax. Game time is 2 p.m.
