During periods of torrential rain, the Horton Griffins and the Avon View Avalanche completed their opening game in the Nova Scotia Schools Athletic Football Conference Sept. 9 in Windsor with the Avalanche falling 28-9 to the Kings County high school.

The offensive stars for the Avalanche included quarterback Cory Whitney, who threw for 120 yards in the air on a day that saw him complete seven of 14 passes. On the ground, Matt Page rushed for 90 yards on 12 carries. Nick Smith scored the lone Avalanche touchdown as he recovered a fumble and ran it into the Horton end zone. Trevor House added the extra point. 

The other two Avon View points were recorded by AJ Whitehead, who had a safety.

Defensively for the Avalanche, Colin Walker intercepted one Horton pass while Brandon Hirschfield had nine tackles. Whitehead added seven other tackles.

Zack Gouthro scored a pair of touchdowns for Horton, who recorded a total of four on the afternoon.

The Avalanche draw their bye-week early in the 2012 season as they will not play again until Friday, Sept. 21 in Cole Harbour at 7 p.m. The Avalanche will play at home again on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. when they host Dr. J.H. Gillis High School from Antigonish.
