The Avon View Avalanche football team are hoping to collect a win this weekend after losing their first two games of the season.

The Avalanche will be at home on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a 1 p.m. game against the Dr. John Hugh Gillis High School team from Antigonish.

The Avalanche, lead by quarterback Cory Whitney, lost their home opener 28-9 to Horton on Sept. 9.

Last weekend, on Sept. 21, they travelled to the Halifax Regional Municipality to take on Cole Harbour. They gave up two early first-half touchdowns and could not get their offense in motion, losing 21-2.

AJ Whitehead was ferocious on the defensive side, making 21 tackles while registering a sack and blocking a punt. Brandon Hirschfield registered 12 tackles and gained 60 all-purpose yards. Kyle Fraser picked off one Cole Harbour pass for an interception and also recovered a fumble while gaining 30 return yards. Avon View's only points came on a safety.

Offensively, Whitney completed seven passes on 16 attempts for 80 yards while Trevor House caught three of those seven completions for 50 yards. On the ground, Matt Page rushed a total of eight times for 40 yards.

Following this Sunday's game, Avon View will travel to play J.L. Ilsley at 1 p.m. Oct. 7. The following weekend, they are at home to take on Central Kings at 1 p.m. Oct. 14.

The final three games of regular season play will be Oct. 22 at Auburn at 7 p.m., Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at North East Kings, and Nov. 3 at AVHS versus Halifax West at 2 p.m. Playoff weekend for the Scotia Division, should Avon View turn their season around, will be held at Burnside Nov 9-11. The Scotia League Championship, in Burnside, will be held Nov. 18 at 1 p.m.
