What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but when it comes to this Sidney Crosby case, the rules don’t apply. A package of ‘Sid the Kid’ memorabilia found its way to Windsor last week.

Hockey Heritage Museum curator Carole Peterson said she could not imagine who had send her a package from Las Vegas, Nevada when Sassha Wile, who spends time as a volunteer at the Museum, brought her a special mail delivery June 24. “Who do I know in Las Vegas?” was all Peterson thought as she opened the unexpected delivery.

Inside: an official Sidney Crosby jersey, micro-jersey and puck. Precious gifts considering he led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a Stanley Cup win against the Detroit Red Wings - the youngest captain to do so - in a final series held earlier this month.

Also included was a one-page note signed by Jim, Lois, John, Kelly, Jimmy and Joseph of the Nicholson family. Peterson recalled that Lois, Jim and Kelly Nicholson had come into the Hockey Heritage Museum (July 1, 2008), and they had noted a lack of Crosby stuff there.

However, she had never thought they would help to fill the void. “It was an answer to a dream,” Peterson said. “I just couldn’t believe it. “To take the time to put this package together and send it (in donation) shows their belief that Windsor is The Birthplace of Hockey,” Peterson said. “I have to say thank you. I don’t think folks realize how much it’s appreciated when they give something to a museum. By doing so, they’re in a sense sharing what they have with everyone. “This means a lot to us; people will come in now just to see this jersey and try it on,” Peterson said. “They’ve done a really wonderful thing for Windsor’s Hockey Heritage.

Peterson said, “the day the parcel came, I called everyone I was so excited. Seven people had their pictures taken in (‘Sid the Kid’s’) jersey on the first day we got it. “We’ll have to try to get him in here and sign his jersey,” Peterson said with a smile. “Everyone is so complimentary of Windsor and it makes you feel good when you are from here,” Peterson added. “The tourists love Windsor. I read the Nicholsons’ letter and thought, what wonderful people they must be. To do this for us, and a year later.” --

The letter reads: “I am writing you to let you know that my family has fallen in love with one of your hometown boys; Sidney Crosby (from Cole Harbour). Our family is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but we have since relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada. We’ve never cut our ties from our hometown and we remain avid Pittsburgh Penguin fans…. “We have visited Nova Scotia on several occasions, bringing with us other family members like our children and our parents. And, being hockey followers, we made it a point to visit your Museum. Each time, hospitality and educational information given to us was outstanding… “Thanks for all you do to keep the great sport of hockey alive. Love, live, laughter, happiness, peace of heart and exciting hockey always.

Signed, the Nicholson Family.”
