The Avon River Rats doubled the Truro Phantoms 8-4 on the road Dec. 1.
Head coach Rick Purcell said the first two periods were close.
The Phantoms opened the scoring but that was the only lead they held throughout the entire game.
First period goals scored by the River Rats came from the sticks of Chad Greenough, Tom Malone, and Corey Dewtie. The Phantom goal scorers were Brett Jordan and Matt Shapleigh.
In the second period, Curtis Lang tallied one. Fundy tied it 4-4 with goals by Ricky MacDonald and Dalton Turner.
Between the second and third periods, Purcell said he asked the players to do one thing when they took the ice — “play the way I know you can and we would win this game.”
According to Purcell, in an email following the game, the Rats played their best period of the year, scoring four unanswered goals. Goal scorers were Andy West, Sam Ross and Kyle McLean with two.
Jesse Lawrence made some key saves in nets for the River Rats.
Purcell said the game standouts were Malone and Sam Ross, who both put in their best effort — each scoring a goal and providing two assists. Dave Phillips also showed why he was appointed the team captain, Purcell noted, as Phillips started the third period fast and physical, which pumped up the rest of the team.
“The River Rats are starting to gel as a solid, well-rounded team. Expect a much better second half to the season,” Purcell noted.
