The Avon View Avalanche were expecting a tough and physical game in Canning Jan. 11 against the league-leading North East Kings Titans, who had lost only one game all season. The Avalanche, however, came to play, stood their ground and extended their Valley High School Hockey League winning streak to four games. They defeated the Titans with a hard fought 4-3 victory.

Avon View fell behind 2-0 before rallying for a pair of goals to tie the game. The Titans scored to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes. The Avalanche listened intently to Head Coach Mark Tye at the conclusion of the second period and it paid off as the Avalanche scored a pair of goals for a 4-3 win.

AVHS is now 8-4-0-1 for 17 points on the season.

The Avalanche was scheduled to play West Kings Jan. 12 at home but that game was postponed by West Kings.

AVHS is scheduled for a pair of home games this week.

On Jan. 17, the Horton Griffins will travel to Windsor for a 7:30 p.m. start. The next night, Jan. 18, the Avalanche will entertain the Parkview Panthers, from Bridgewater, in a 7:45 p.m. start.

A pair of wins by the Avalanche will give them 10 on the season, but winning won’t be easy. The team has already lost three times to the South Shore school this season. The Panthers currently occupy second place in the league standings.

The make-up game with the West Kings Wolverines will take place Friday, Jan. 25 at 7:45 p.m. at Hants Exhibition Arena in Windsor.

Noteworthy news

Goaltender Alex Williams presently leads the league in minutes played as he has appeared in 11 of the Avalanche's 13 regular season games.

Williams has a goals against average of 4.13 in 660 minutes played.

The team's leading scorer, Trevor House, who has connected for 14 goals and 20 points to date in the 2012-13 season, was one of four Avalanche players named to play in the Valley High School Hockey League All-Star game Jan. 22, in Canning at the Glooscap Arena starting at 3:30 p.m.

Besides House, who is ninth in league scoring, Matt Lahey and Jeremy Parker, who have a combined total of 15 goals between them, and Alex Sauson will also be competing.

The Avon View players will be part of the Eastern Division team, which consists of players from Horton, North East Kings and Parkview. The Western Division All-Stars will be comprised of players from Central Kings, West Kings, Digby and Middleton.

The Eastern Division, based on the league standings, are considered the favourites to win the 2013 All-Star Classic.
