The Avon View Avalanche boys hockey team’s registered another win in the Valley High School Hockey League, giving them their fifth consecutive victory while garnering their eighth win in their past nine games, which includes tournament play.
On Jan. 17, at the Hants Exhibition Arena, the scoring started slowly with Avon View taking a 1-0 lead over Horton in the first period.
The offense heated up in the second period with the score tied 3-3 after 40 minutes.
The game was a chippy affair despite the fact two referees were on hand. It got a little heated when Horton’s coach was ejected after having words with the officials.
The Avalanche blew the game wide open early in the third period with three consecutive goals to take a commanding 6-3 lead. They won the bout 8-4.
Trevor House scored a pair of goals for the Avalanche while the other top marksmen included Matt Lahey, Carter Swain and Brett Wallace.
Marshall Gordon got the start in goal for the Avalanche as Alex Williams was given a rest, with Williams going into the game leading the league in minutes played.
The Avalanche are now 9-4-0-1 on the season. They were looking forward to their fourth game of the season against the Parkview Panthers Jan. 18 but the Panthers were unable to make the trip from the South Shore due to the weather. No date has been set for this make-up game but the Avalanche will be looking forward to it as three of their four losses have come at the hands of the Panthers this year.
Avalanche notes
• Forward Jeremy Parker sat out the second game of his three game league suspension on Thursday night.
The suspension came as a result of an altercation with an official in Bridgewater during the Parkview game back on Dec. 15.
• Matt Lahey was chosen third star of the game in the Valley High School Hockey League All-Star Game Jan. 20 in Canning.
Lahey’s East Team defeated the West Team 5-4 in overtime, with the game winner being scored with only 49 seconds left in overtime.
• The Avalanche will play at home Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. against the West Kings Wolverines. A win on Friday could tie the Avalanche for second place in the league standings.
