They are the champions.

King’s-Edgehill downed defending provincial champs Northumberland Nighthawks 4-2 to capture the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Girls’ Hockey Championships banner, on their home ice in the Hants Exhibition Arena in Windsor, March 27.

Erica Kelly and Sierra Lee each finished the game with two goals and one assist for King’s. Their line mate, Lea MacLeod, contributed three assists. Kelly scored an empty net goal in the last minute of the third period to give King’s the two-point lead.

Head coach Laura Shearer says passion for the sport helped the team become the first crew from King’s-Edgehill to win the provincial banner for girls’ hockey.

“They came out today with a lot of heart. We only have 12 skaters and everybody was flying,” said Shearer, following the banner presentation at centre ice.

“They played smart. They used their speed to their advantage and… everyone just played their hardest.”

King’s-Edgehill’s team includes a mix of junior and senior high players. Three players will be graduating this year. Before provincials, the team won regionals and went undefeated in league play.

“Every day we got to the rink they were running to the dressing room to get ready and this morning they were up at 6 a.m. wanting to play hockey. It makes it great to teach when all they want to do is learn,” said Shearer.

Kelly recorded a hat trick to help the home team beat the C.P. Allen Cheetahs 3-1 in a semi-final match on March 26. The win came hours after the Prince Andrew Panthers upset King’s 2-1 in double overtime.

King’s started the three-day, 15-game tournament off with a 2-1 win over the Auburn High School.

Northumberland beat the Riverview High School, CP Allen, Horton High and Auburn before facing King’s in the final.
