Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary School Christmas dinner a hit with students

SUMMERVILLE, N.S. – Hot turkey, vegetables and gravy was a special lunchtime treat for students at Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary School on Dec. 19.

For Amy Ross, the lunch program co-ordinator, the event brings a sense of community to the school.

“All three of my children have gone to school here and we’ve always gone to the turkey dinner,” Ross said. “For some kids, this could be the only turkey they get.”

Ross also helps to facilitate the school garden, and some of the vegetables from that were being served at the dinner.

“The dessert is a pumpkin spice muffin, and the pumpkins were grown here and the kids were involved with that,” she said. “The kids help to set the tables, do all of the centre-pieces, they’re very involved.”

The dinner has been an annual tradition at the school for more than 10 years.

The Hants Shore Community Health Centre partners with the school’s lunch program.
