KENTVILLE – Get a read on you and your other half this Valentine’s at Kentville’s Mystic Raven shop, where tea leaf and tarot card readings for couples are on deck.
If the thought to try something different on Valentine’s Day , this could be the year to do it. Eve Chapman, the owner, astrologist and psychic at Kentville’s curio shop, Mystic Raven, is looking forward to the V-day sessions, and reading couple’s cards together.
While always a unique experience, it adds a certain something when doing it with a partner, she says.
“People never know what to expect when they come in for the first time. It’s actually quite a soothing experience and can be something special to share and reflect on,” says Chapman.
What to expect
The sessions are all about energy and having an open mind, says Chapman, who has been practicing the craft, as she calls it, for more than 20 years.
Her shop, located at the end of the first block on Church Avenue in downtown Kentville, is a safe space. When walking through the door, people are met with dark, art filled walls and various stones all over, whether sitting by themselves or hanging as part of a jewelry piece.
“I’ve been told people feel very calm when they walk in here, and that’s really how it should be. You can really feel the different energies in here,” she says.
The readings offered are slightly different. Tea leaf readings, whether for solo visitors or couples, last either for 15 or 30 minutes, and are more casual feeling.
Tarot card readings, however, go more in depth, lasting typically for 30 minutes or one hour.
They can sometimes be even longer, according to Chapman.
“I’ve had readings last up to three hours before. Sometimes there’s a lot to unpack, and the cards
Reading the cards
Chapman sets up her table with a crystal ball, some stones, a crystal on the end of a chain, and wears her own special stones that help guide her through the readings, and energies that become revealed.
The cards are arranged in diagonal looking rows, with a total of 15 on the table.
Each card has a different meaning, and there are four different suits, just like playing cards.
Some cards, like the Devil, Hangman, Death and the Tower, are often seen as ominous, but shouldn’t always be interpreted that way.
She reveals that even she can be surprised by the cards, but that it takes a lot for it to happen, since these cards in relation to the others dealt nearly always make sense.
“Death almost never means a physical death, but rather the end of a time, or an event, and the birth of a new one, for example,” she says.
While rumours had been circulating the shop will offer voodoo dolls for Valentine’s Day, Chapman wants to clear the air, since her shop is not associated with that kind of magic, she says.
“We in no way offer or practice anything remotely associated with that,” she says.
“We are a safe space, and only work within positive and safe parametres when dealing with magic, and energies.”
She encourages couples to experience having their cards read together and sharing a unique experience this Valentine’s Day.
“You never know what the cards will reveal,” says Chapman, with a smile.
Regular rates for tea leaf and tarot card readings range from $25 to $60, depending on session lengths, but are discounted this Valentine’s day. For more information, please see the shop’s Facebook page or phone Eve Champan at 902-692-9791.
