PEREAU, NS - Although residents of a Pereau house fire escaped unharmed on April 18, one of their four cats has gone missing.

A passerby noticed the porch of the home was on fire and alerted the residents inside.

At 4:54 p.m., the Canning Volunteer Fire Department received the call. They were able to rescue three of the family’s cats as well as a pet hamster.

The residents did not return home last night, but Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Skaling says “the house is in good shape,” adding that most of the damage is exterior.

The fire was out by 6:15 p.m., with the cause being ruled accidental. Skaling hopes the cat was able to escape safely.

The house fire was reported less than 10 minutes after a separate fire was put out in Canning.

At 4:02 p.m., firefighters were called to Old Baxter Mill Rd. where Wild Mountain Farm had a small shed in flames. Skaling says there were no injuries to residents or livestock.

The crew cleared the farm by 4:45 p.m. The cause of that fire is currently under investigation.
