The 20-year-old man, who was serving a youth sentence at the facility at the time of the incident, was charged as an adult following the riot. He was originally charged with taking part in a riot and wilfully damaging the property of the youth facility to a value not exceeding $5,000.
The man was not present in Kentville provincial court on April 18, having earlier filed a designation of counsel allowing his defence lawyer to appear on his behalf.
A not guilty plea was entered to the charge of taking part in a riot but a guilty plea was entered to a charge of resisting or obstructing an officer. The charge of wilfully damaging property was dismissed with the Crown offering no evidence.The matter has been adjourned to June 15 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. The man committed the offence on Sept. 4, 2016.
