William and Olivia top most popular baby names for Nova Scotia in 2017

The top names for children born in New Brunswick in 2017 included Emma, Olivia, Liam and Noah.
The top names for children born in Nova Scotia in 2017 included Olivia, Charlotte, Scarlett, Sophia, Ava, William, Benjamin, Liam, Oliver and Lincoln.

NOVA SCOTIA - The provincial government released statistics for the most popular baby names in 2017, and the results are pretty similar to 2016.

Olivia (53 babies) and William (60) were the two most favoured baby names this year according to Nova Scotia's Registry of Vital Statistics, which is the same top girl and boy names as last year. 

Of the 7,646 registered births in Nova Scotia up to Dec. 28, the top 10 names were Olivia, Charlotte, Scarlett, Sophia, Ava, William, Benjamin, Liam, Oliver and Lincoln.

According to a press release from the provincial government, the most popular names usually remain fairly consistent over the years, however, there are a few new favourites this year such as Lincoln, Alexander, Grayson, Jaxon, Thomas, Hannah, Avery, Zoey and Sadie.

Nova Scotia began formally registering births on Aug. 1, 1864. The most popular names that year were Mary and John.
