The annual spring gala fundraiser on April 28 for the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation proved to be more popular than ever before, raising $44,000, says managing director Paulette Sweeney-Goodwin.

“We experienced significant growth at this year’s event,” she said. “When we look at the total ticket sales of 308, compared to last year at 237, it was definitely major growth.”

She said the foundation is a “major step” closer to the purchase of eight new heart monitors, with a commitment of $11,000 remaining.

That amount will hopefully be raised and/or even surpassed during the next fundraising event – the Spring Appeal.

Sweeney-Goodwin says that initiative will provide an opportunity for anyone who was unable to attend this year’s gala to support and be a part of the fundraising.

“Directly on the heels of that we will be holding the Jody Shelley’s Golf Fore Health on July 6,” said Sweeney-Goodwin.

Those wishing to donate to the Foundation can do so by calling 902-749-1669 or by mailing their donation to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation, P.O.Box 7, Yarmouth, N.S. B5A 4B1.

In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the first hospital opening in Yarmouth – an eight-bed facility, opened on March 11, 1912 on Sycamore Street – the theme of this year’s fundraising gala tied in with the 100th anniversary gemstone, which is a 10-carat diamond. The playful theme title chosen for this year’s event was Diamonds – A Gala’s Best Friend.
