Seven of the River Rats’ 13 victories this season have either been recorded in overtime or in a shoot-out, while one of their two losses has been in a shoot-out.
On Nov. 20, at the Hants Exhibition Arena, the River Rats recorded their latest nail-biting victory. They scored a 5-4 overtime win over the last place (5-9-2) Bedford Wolverines.
The River Rats jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before the game was even 10 minutes old on goals from Logan Cleveland and Tyler Comeau.
After the River Rats’ two goals, the Wolverines — who now have a -36 goal differential this season compared to the River Rats’ +19 — scored nine seconds later to move to within 2-1, before tying the game 54 seconds later at 2-2.
Devon Pennell, with the first of his three goals on the night, scored before the first period concluded to give Avon a 3-2 lead.
The Wolverines’ Matt Bryant scored his second of the game to knot the score at 3-3 in the second period.
Just 5:33 into the third period, Pennell scored again to put his team up 4-3. Less than three minutes later, Bedford scored one more time to tie the game at 4-4 and force overtime.
With 39 seconds left in the five-minute sudden death overtime, Pennell scored his sixth goal of the season to give the River Rats the 5-4 win.
The River Rats travelled to Bedford Nov. 25 and defeated the Wolverines 9-4, with nine different players all registering a goal. Scoring for the River Rats were Peter MacDougal, Joe Beaton, Adam Ferguson, Austin Bukovec, Tyler Dixon, Allister Avard, Tyler LaPierre, Justin Brown, Cleveland and Comeau.
Josh MacLeod was in nets for the River Rats, and stopped 48 shots on goal.
Despite being in last place in the six-team league, the Wolverines have played five games against the River Rats this season and four of them have been decided by a single goal. The River Rats have won 6-5 and 5-4 in overtime while losing 5-4 in a shoot-out while suffering their only loss in regulation time this season by a score of 9-8.
The River Rats are set to take on the Eastern Shore Thunder Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Hants Exhibition Arena.
The River Rats hit the road Dec. 2 to take on the Metro Jaguars and then on Dec. 3, the Cumberland/Colchester Colts.
On Dec. 10, they travel to the Eastern Shore Community Centre to take on the Thunder.
Fans can catch the River Rats back in action in Windsor at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 when they host the Metro Jaguars.
