WINDSOR, N.S. – King’s-Edgehill School celebrated its top athletes during the annual athletic banquet on May 30.

Kim Walsh, director of athletics, said it was an interesting year for the school’s athletes. Many of the schools they usually compete against were going through a work-to-rule labour dispute between teachers and the provincial government, which interrupted many of the school sporting tournaments.

Despite that, Walsh was proud of the hard work KES student-athletes put in.

“All teams did very well this year, although it was a challenge with the winter varsity sports to get the usual number of games in with work-to-rule,” Walsh said. “We did depend on many more competitions with our other independent member schools in the Maritimes, as well as teams from outside the province.”

Walsh said the private school saw an increase in student participation in equestrian, badminton, dance, yoga and other activities.

“Our biggest sport by numbers in the spring is track and field and they had 70 athletes who improved from districts to regionals and provincials, ultimately winning the team provincial championships for the second year in a row,” he said.

“Both senior girls' and boys' rugby teams won their regional championships and qualified for provincials, with the boys placing second overall in D1 against Sir John A.”

All of the school’s major award winners participated in at least three varsity sports and most were either full honours or International Baccalaureate students.
