1 killed, 2 injured in shooting by gunman on scooter in New York City

An 86-year-old New York City man was shot and killed and at least three others wounded by a man on a scooter who police say opened fire at random in Queens on Saturday.

A 25-year-old suspect is in custody, New York Police Chief Joseph Kenney said at a press conference.

The shooting began around 11:10 a.m. A 21-year-old Hispanic man was shot in the shoulder, Kenney said. A short time later, an 86-year-old man was shot in the back in Richmond Hill. He later died in hospital. The gunman shot another Hispanic man, 44, in the face. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

About a mile away and less than 10 minutes later, a 63-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition, police said.

Police said the suspect was riding an illegal scooter without a license plate. He was arrested around 1 pm. Police said he was carrying a 9-mm handgun with an extended magazine.

A police spokesman could not provide additional details, including the man in custody or his motives, as investigators were still trying to piece together what prompted the shooting.
