HANTSPORT, N.S. —

The Valley Credit Union announced a significant donation of $22,000 in support of Hantsport Memorial Community Centre (HMCC) on May 8 during an open house at the Hantsport branch.

HMCC is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the maintenance and provision of facilities for recreational, cultural, athletic, and educational purposes.

The facilities include Nova Scotia's oldest operating outdoor public swimming pool, a children's
playground with splash pad, a fully-enclosed leash-free dog park, modular skate park, outdoor
basketball court, tennis courts with night lighting, baseball and soccer fields, full 400-metre running track, and an outdoor skating rink maintained by volunteers during the winter months.

HMCC hosts many community events, including the annual Canada Day celebrations for the region and summer day camps.

At the heart of HMCC's 18-acre property is Churchill House, a historic homestead available for rent for private functions and weddings. Essentially, the HMCC is the centre of the Hantsport community.

“Chris (Cuvilier) and I both grew up here and have fond memories of spending much of our childhoods at the HMCC properties. We joined the board and over the last few years, we all worked very hard to revitalize the facilities and programs. We have been able to do this due to the incredible support from the community in the form of patronage, fundraising, and donations,” says Nick Zamora, president of the board of Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. “But these funds from Valley Credit Union will allow us to complete some big improvements we need in short order.”

“Yes, we already know how we’re spending the funds,” adds HMCC board member Chris Cuvilier.

“We have seven teams using our ball fields for their competitive league games. The oldest team now needs the Med Starratt Bantam field, which is in need of significant improvements. This sponsorship agreement allows us to add a fence and netting to the field, as well as replace the scoreboard and dugouts before their season starts in June.”

The Valley Credit Union is a non-profit, full-service financial institution with seven branches between Hantsport and Bridgetown, a wealth management office, more than 11,000 members, and approximately $188 million in assets; 1,500 of which are business owners.

“We are very pleased to be able to assist,” says Len Ells, president and CEO of Valley Credit Union. “We feel very akin to the HMCC in that we are long-standing members of the Hantsport community and desperately want to see it thrive. We are both committed to the community and dependent on it for our success. The support we receive from the people of Hantsport allows us to thrive here and we are excited to be able to give back in this meaningful way.”
