Over the past five years or so, there has been an ongoing issue concerning a fire service contract between the Windsor Fire Department and the Municipality of West Hants, resulting in this matter recently ending in the severing of ties between the two parties.
Let me be clear, this issue will affect all residents living in Hantsport, West Hants and Windsor, in one way of another.
Although Windsor town council has not been a part of the noted process, I personally, as an elected councillor within the town, believe I would be remiss if I did not let you, the citizens of Windsor, know where I stand on this matter.
As an elected official for the past seven years and a member of the now defunct West Hants-Windsor Joint Fire Advisory Committee, I obviously bring to the plate certain insights and background information not available to the general public. That being said, it is not my intention to cast dispersions on anyone. I only wish to point out that the Windsor Fire Department for so many years has provided the highest quality volunteer fire service any community could ever hope for and, in my opinion, ranks second to none within the country.
I also know and have the highest regard for both Chief Scott Burgess and his executive, who have conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism during these very trying times.
I would also like to take this opportunity to commend all the other firefighters within our surrounding communities for the admirable job they do. This issue is not about our great volunteers.
Finally, having lived in Windsor for more than 40 years, I consider it a privilege to know many of our past and present firefighters who have always answered any and all calls.
In short, I would like to publicly state that I fully support the Windsor Fire Department, Chief Burgess, his executive and the volunteers who continue to make this area a safer place for all of us to live and work.
