Salt Lake City to host 2034 Winter Games, French Alps to receive provisional accreditation for 2030

PARIS – The Winter Games will return to Salt Lake City in 2034, while the 2030 Olympics will be temporarily set for the French Alps, officials said Wednesday.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and other organization officials were in Paris this week, meeting with International Olympic Committee members and seeking support for their bid to bring the Winter Games back to its 2002 site.

Salt Lake City looked like a 2034 shoo-in for weeks, but there have been late concerns from the IOC that US officials may not support the stranded. World Anti-Doping Agency (Vata).

US lawmakers have launched an investigation into possible doping by Chinese swimmers ahead of the Tokyo Games, which could undermine WADA’s authority.

“The last 10 days of my life were completely unexpected,” Fraser Bullock, Chairman of the Salt Lake City Auction, told NBC affiliate KSL minutes after voting for Salt Lake City. “We were cruising towards the final award and then this came along and we had to settle for it.”

But Bullock said he has full confidence in IOC 2034 organizers as Salt Lake City voted 83-6.

“We hope that we can make some changes that will help the US and the global anti-doping community come together and not have disagreements,” Bullock said. “We hope it will be really constructive.”

Bullock says each location by 2034 either already exists or will be built for temporary use so that local taxpayers don’t incur ongoing costs or unused facilities.

“These locations continue the rich legacy of 2002 that continues to benefit the state of Utah and its people today,” Bullock said.

Hundreds of Utahns watched the announcement on big-screen televisions in Washington Square Park and erupted in cheers when the vote was cast and announced at 4:22 a.m. MDT.

A cauldron was lit at Rice-Eccles Stadium at the University of Utah to mark the return of games.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” said Visit Salt Lake President and CEO Kaitlin Eskelson. “It’s a very exciting time and it’s going to take us to that global level.”

This will be the fifth time it will be held on American soil. America previously rolled out the winter red carpet in Lake Placid (1932 and 1980) and Squaw Valley (1960) in addition to Salt Lake City (2002 and 2034).

The IOC made a conditional award to France pending additional financial guarantees from organizers, officials said.

France will host the Winter Olympics for the fourth time, following Chamonix in 1924, Grenoble in 1968 and Albertville in 1992.

The sites and dates for the next five sets of games are now largely set, including the Summer Olympics that begin in Paris this week.
