BLACK ROCK, N.S. —

Skateboarders waiting for their next chance to ride are in luck.

The second annual Retro Champ of the Ramp competition day is slated to return to 808 Rawding Road in Black Rock March 23.

“It’s going to be the battle for the bragging rights of the year and the chance to lift up a trophy,” said organizer Joe Huntley.

The competition includes beginner, intermediate and advanced classes. About 100 people attended last year, including participants and spectators.

“We encourage people to come watch,” said Huntley, who added that there is definitely a wow factor when some of the more experienced riders hit the ramp.

“We see anything from people who can barely ride the ramp, right through to what we would call experts.”

Huntley helped build the ramp in his friend’s barn about four years ago, and they’ve open it up to members of the public many times since then.

“It was just something that we could do. We were able to do it, so we’ve done it and now… we let people come ride it,” the 32-year-old said.

“We didn’t have this stuff around here when we were growing up.”

Huntley got into skating more than 20 years ago, and he’s happy to see the sport gaining more and more recognition in recent years. He hopes to continue to build on that momentum.

“Skateboarding seems to be growing a lot more now with skate parks coming up in a lot of different towns across the province, so it’s really good to get… more people interested,” he said.

“For a lot of skateboarders around there’s not really much going on in the winter, so this gives them something to look forward to.”

The cost to attend is a $5 cover charge. There will be food, beverages and live music at the event. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the competition gets underway at 1:30 p.m.
