The Boston Bruins don’t need to make a big splash before the NHL trade deadline, but they aren’t going to sit idly by.

The Bruins announced Thursday evening that they have acquired forwards Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals.

Capitals too Confirmed trade 6:14 pm ET, with the Minnesota Wild becoming the third team added to the deal. Orlov was there Originally traded to Minnesota Washington retained 50% of his salary before the Wild sent him to the Bruins, while retaining another 25%. In short, the addition of the Wild to the deal helped give the Bruins some cap relief.

Here are the full terms of the deal:

Bruins get
Dmitry Orlov
Garnet Hathaway

Capital gains
2023 First Round Selection (BOS)
2024 Third Round Examination (BOS)
2025 Second Round Examination (BOS)
Craig Smith
(Keeps 50% of Orlov’s salary)

Wild acquisition
2023 Fifth Round Examination (BOS)
(Keeps 25% of Orlov’s salary)

In adding Hathaway and Orlov to their roster, the Bruins bring in two players with a specific style of play. In a word, they are tough.

Hathaway fits in well with the Bruins’ big-checking streak and is projected as a bit-six forward in history as a pest to his opponents. Orlov is a left-shot defenseman who eats up minutes — 22 minutes per game — that many believe is Boston’s biggest need entering the deadline.

By adding two players who will play a lot of minutes, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery can get his wish and scale back the usage of his players as the regular season winds down.
