Gaspereau Elementary may only have a few students, but it’s got plenty of community support. With only about 150 students, the Primary-Grade 5 school in the heart of the Gaspereau Valley is fundraising to offer the kids extra opportunities. The biggest fundraiser of the year is the annual auction organized by the Home and School committee on June 10.
“This year’s auction is shaping up to be an amazing event,” says Renee Levy, a parent and teacher at the school. “We have many amazing items up for auction.”
They include several big-ticket items, she said, including a barbecue donated by Superstore New Minas, a last will and testament from Tim Peacock at Kimball Brogan Law, a Makita router from Rockwell Home Hardware, a one-night stay at White Point Resort, 10 nights of accommodations in Costa Rica and a Daikin heat pump donated by White Rock Mechanical.
People can also bid on experiences, like a half-hour helicopter ride, lift and rental passes from Ski Martock, three months of mat monsters from Abhaya Mixed Martial Arts, green fees at Ken-Wo or an hour of ice time at the Kentville rink.
There are plenty of gift cards and gift baskets from local businesses, Levy added, as well as other donations like a 12-yard load of gravel from W.K. Sharp and Sons.
The parents and family members of the students help out as well, with many baking up sweet treats like cakes and cheesecakes for the auction.
“We’ve got over 100 items,” Levy said. “There’s something for everyone, and so many wonderful prizes.”
Donations, she added, are still coming in.
“We’re still accepting donations if anyone is looking to donate to this awesome auction,” she said.
The funds raised will make a big difference to the school.
“Money raised from this wonderful auction will enrich the learning experiences of the students at Gaspereau Valley Elementary School,” she said. “Technology, special performances, playground improvements and equipment are just a few of the ways this auction directly benefits our students.”
The auction will be held June 10 at the Gaspereau Hall, located across from the school. Viewing is at 5 p.m. with the auction getting underway at 5:30 p.m.
