COLDBROOK, NS - It’s about giving families an opportunity to have a fun day out with the kids and to take in Christmas celebrations in a traditional country store setting.

Scotian Gold retail manager Rob Bedard said their annual Christmas in the Country event is something they’ve put on for the past 15 years to give back to the community and it’s all about the kids.

The free event takes place on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Scotian Gold Country Store and the adjacent Pet and Horse Store in Coldbrook. Bedard said the staff organizes the celebration and they look forward to it each year. They’ve been preparing for about three to four weeks.

“It’s really neat because we get to see a lot of the same customers come back year-in and year-out, so you watch the kids grow,” Bedard said. “It’s just a really good way for us to give back to the community.”

There will be an opportunity for kids to have photos taken with Santa Claus. Santa will have candy canes for the children and they’ll be given “reindeer food” to set out for Rudolph and the gang on Christmas Eve.

There will be homemade gingerbread cookie decorating in the Dominion room upstairs from the Country Store. Former staff member Ellen Clarke volunteers to bake the cookies from scratch. Bedard said this is always a huge hit with the kids.

Long-time employee Jeff Knowles will be taking visitors for rides on a wagon pulled by a tractor. Bedard said the wagon rides are always a popular attraction for children. If there’s a little bit of snow falling, it makes the rides even more special.

There will be live musical entertainment by Bob Deveau, who also makes balloon animals for the kids. Bedard said children would have a chance to try out some remote controlled toy cars. There will also be some special deals for customers that day.

Bedard said they would be hosting their annual lady’s shopping party on Dec. 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
