THREE MILE PLAINS, N.S. —

A Three Mile Plains family is feeling the love following a recent house fire.

Flames fanned through the family’s bungalow on Windsor Back Road early in the afternoon Aug. 16.

Jason Cochrane, Brooklyn’s fire chief, said firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 1:37 p.m.

They arrived to find “heavy fire” at the residence occupied by two adults and four children, he said.

“It had been cleared. The family was home. They were alerted by a passerby who pulled in… and there was also an RCMP officer on scene to double check the home, as fire was on the outside of the home at the time.”

The fire started in an outbuilding beside the house, Cochrane said.

He commended the good Samaritan who alerted the family after spotting the blaze.

“He stopped and banged on the door and got them out of the home,” Cochrane said Aug. 19.

“They were very lucky that way.”

The occupants were assessed by EHS paramedics, but there were no injuries.

The family was displaced as a result of the damage done. They’ve since found accommodations thanks to an outpouring of support that started to come through almost immediately.

“The bags of clothes were arriving as early as that evening,” said Cochrane, noting that several groups rallied together to collect items for the family.

“They were overwhelmed by the… outpour from the community,” Cochrane said.

“I was speaking with the homeowners Saturday and, at that time, they had many offers of everything.”

The residence was insured, and the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Both Brooklyn fire stations responded to the call, as well as Windsor, Hantsport and Summerville. Wolfville firefighters assisted by covering Hantsport’s station.

The Office of the Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation.
